The Importance of Attending Graduate Student Orientation

Embarking on a master’s degree program is both exciting and challenging. One important step to ensure a smooth transition into graduate education is attending an orientation. At Zayed University, we encourage every admitted graduate student to attend the two-day orientation program offered by the Deanship of Graduate Studies for several reasons:

   1. Familiarization with Campus and Community Building

Attending new graduate student orientation is the first opportunity for graduate students to learn more about the campus and the campus community. The orientation seminars help graduate students acclimate to the unique culture of Zayed University, providing insights into the values, the people, and the overall environment. This understanding fosters a sense of belonging and prepares graduate students to navigate both academic and social aspects of their graduate experience more effectively.

   2. Introduction to Academic Programs and Policies and Procedures

Graduate programs often have different expectations compared to undergraduate studies. During the orientation seminars, graduate students learn essential information about the program’s curriculum, grading policies, and academic standards. The Graduate Program Coordinators explain the course schedule, including the required courses and elective options, as well as how to maintain good academic performance. Understanding these expectations from the start helps graduate students align their efforts and focus on what is required for success.

   3. Access to Resources and Support Services

Zayed University offers numerous resources to support graduate student success, ranging from the Library and Learning Commons and research facilities to counselling services and sports facilities. The orientation provides a comprehensive introduction to these resources, guiding graduate students on how to access and use them effectively. Knowing where to find academic support, mental health services, and career advice can significantly enhance the graduate experience and help graduate students manage the challenges they may face.

Attending graduate school can be demanding. However, attending new graduate student orientation helps ease the transition into graduate school, making the start of the academic journey less stressful and more manageable. Orientation also provides an excellent opportunity to meet fellow students, faculty, and staff. Establishing relationships early and gaining a clear understanding of the academic program and resources can ease the transition into graduate life and create a sense of community. All newly admitted graduate students should try their best to attend the orientation organized by their university.

The Deanship of Graduate Studies’ orientation seminars are held at the beginning of each semester – usually in January and August each academic year.  For more information on the new graduate student orientation seminars, please contact Kalthoum AlMarzouqi, Senior Graduate Programs Admissions Officer at +971-2-599-3562 / Kalthoum.AlMarzouqi@zu.ac.ae
